I am Desmond (33 years old, Singaporean Chinese), a full-time tutor who specializes in tutoring 'O' Level E. Maths, A. Maths, Chemistry and Physics as well as 'A' Level Maths C and Chemistry.
I started tutoring 12 years ago before entering National University of Singapore and continued part-time while pursuing a Bachelor of Business Admin Hons degree before converting into a full-time tutor shortly after graduation. I have a passion for entrepreneurship as well as helping teenagers fulfill their potential by performing well in school. My job as a full-time tutor allows me to pursue both my passions as I can build up my small business ventures during the day time while committing to my students from late afternoon to night on weekdays and weekends.
I am not an NIE-trained teacher and I have a Bachelor of Business Admin Hons degree which may not seem to have a direct relationship to the subjects I am tutoring. However, I am able to call upon my long years of experience with more than 40 students of varying academic capabilities. My experience also made me very proficient in the subjects I am tutoring and allows me to better identify a student's strengths and weaknesses. I am able to tailor my lessons to suit individual students' pace of learning to address first their understanding of concepts and later their proficiency in understanding and answering questions.
One of my strengths as mentioned often by my students is that I can present concepts in an easy to understand manner while still being detailed. I am able to build a rapport with my students, serving not just as a tutor but also as a friend, adviser and even counselor. I love to share my own experiences as a student, positive and negative, to encourage them to work hard for their goals and inspire them to fulfill their own dreams. In fact, I still maintain contact with many of my students years after the assignment has been completed and I am still good friends with some of them, providing guidance and advice on matters including course selection during Polytechnic and University.
I can say with certainty and pride that most of my students ended up performing beyond expectations during their 'O' Level examinations and went on to enroll in Junior Colleges or pursue their ideal course in Polytechnic/University. It gives me a deep sense of achievement and fulfillment to see my students and their parents happy after receiving their results. Many of my students are habitual failures or borderline performers in their subjects when I started tutoring them and they ended up getting B3s or As for 'O' Levels. Their achievements give me a great satisfaction and I feel happy for them that their efforts in understanding my classes and own self-practice paid off in the end.
While I tutored a fair share of students from top schools, a large portion of my students come from neighborhood schools. I do not believe in just taking on students who are already good and helping them maintain their good results so that I can boost a good record. I strongly believe in taking on students who are struggling and guiding them to achieve the best possible grade they can.
